How to use it
- Go through it with every new starter, and with anyone returning after illness.
- Make sure each person knows they must tell a manager, before starting work, about symptoms such as diarrhoea or vomiting, or an infected wound or skin condition.
- If someone isn’t fit to work with food, write what was agreed: other duties, or staying off until they are well.
- Keep health details private and only as long as you need them.
EU food hygiene law says a person suffering from, or carrying, a disease likely to be passed on through food, or with infected wounds, skin infections, sores or diarrhoea, must not handle food where there is a risk of contamination, and must report it to the food business (Regulation (EC) No 852/2004, Annex II, Chapter VIII). The FSAI’s fitness to work assessment (SC7) in the FSAI Safe Catering pack has the questions to ask.
When paper gets hard to keep up
Paper sheets get missed on busy days, filled in at the end of a shift, and lost when you need them. In Hygivo, each staff member acknowledges the duty to report illness on their own phone. Hygivo stores no health details: keep any assessment on paper. Records in Hygivo.
This is general information, not advice for your business. Your food safety management system (HACCP plan) and FSAI guidance are the reference. Hygivo is not affiliated with or endorsed by the FSAI.
